Skybrake Automated Meter Reading System

Analogue meter data digitalized

Skybrake AMR reads analogue meter indications and converts them to digital data. The obtained data are sent to company’s data centre (server).

Skybrake AMR is unique in that it is suitable for existing systems and meters. Skybrake AMR allows to streamline a company’s resource management system with minimal investment. The device requires no interference with the resource supply system during installation.

Principle of operation

Skybrake AMR reads the analogue meter indication, transforms it to digital data, encrypts them and sends to the company data centre by means of wireless data transmission. The data are decrypted at the moment of their reception by final addressee.

GPS

GPS or Global Positioning System is a U.S. Air Force technology which allows to determine the location of a GPS receiver by sending radio signals. Initially, the GPS technology was developed by U.S. Department of Defense for the enhancement of tactical solutions and research. Its full name is NAVSTAR GPS (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System). Today, the GPS maintenance costs are still covered by U.S. Air Force. Although initially GPS was only meant for military use, now it is being more and more used for civil purposes. Until 2000, the signal available for civilian use was intentionally degraded by a technique called Selective Availability (SA), which introduced position errors of 50 m to 100 m to keep other countries from using the GPS for their purposes.

In addition to the GPS, other global satellite systems are in use or under development, namely the Russian GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo positioning system.. Although for the present the GPS is the only satellite navigation system that is fully functional, in a few years, GLONASS as well as Galileo are likely to be finished. Therefore, Skybrake already integrates its products with both of these systems.

CAN

CAN or CAN-bus (Controller-Area Network) is a built-in vehicle information system which allows the microcontrollers of built-in vehicle devices to communicate with the vehicle’s onboard computer. Skybrake uses the CAN protocol in its devices designed for vehicles to make them even more efficient and functional.

Thanks to CAN-bus connection Skybrake car security systems feature functions like automatic vehicle recognition, where during device installation the device detects the vehicle make and model and adjusts its settings accordingly; or, for instance, the SmartBlink function which allows the car alarm system to control the turn signals and brake lights in case of an alarm.

Skybrake’s 17 years of experience in car electronics allows it to make the most of CAN-bus’ potential. As a result, we are able to develop high class products that require minimum installation time and minimum interfering with vehicle electronics during installation.

Wireless Communication

In its products Skybrake uses wireless communication technologies. Wireless communication is a remote data transmission without using electrical conductors or wires. Wireless communication is used in both short and long distance data transmission. An example for short distance wireless communication is the Skybrake DD2+ personal transmitter whose operation range is up to 5 meters, while, for instance, in Skybrake F20 long distance wireless communication is used for reception and transmission of GPS co-ordinates.

Wireless communication is very widely used in various fields. It forms the base for operation of a big part of contemporary devices for everyday use, like computers, computer accessories and mobile phones.

Skybrake uses the following kinds of wireless communication:

GSM

For efficient working of various modern systems remote data transmission is often required, which provides both information on objects and the option of remote configuration or change of these objects. GSM or Global Systems for Mobile Communications is a solution developed by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and is the most popular and widespread standard for mobile communications in the modern world.

GSM is based on a digital cellular network formed by a series of cellular broadcasting towers where the maximum distance between two towers is 35 kilometres. This is a dense coverage which ensures a high data transmission quality and, along with the development of data broadcasting technology, constantly increasing data transmission rates.

Today the GSM networks operate on four frequency bands (Europe and most of the world: 900/1800 MHz, some countries, e.g., Canada and USA: 850/1900 MHz).

To put it simple, a GSM network consists of an exchange which is connected with the base stations via fixed connections and of SIM cards which connect to the base stations.

Skybrake uses the GSM solution in its products to make the systems more efficient, faster, more functional and more user friendly.

Skybrake also works with GPRS, USSD and other GSM-friendly technologies.

RF ID

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology in which objects are identified using radio signals. The RFID devices used as unique object labels are called RFID tags or RFID transponders.

The RFID system consists of three parts – a reader which reads the tag information. Then, a transponder which sends the identification information. And finally, a computer system or software which processes the data received from the reader.

The system consists of three parts. The active part — the reader (scanner) reads the tag information by sending timing pulses. The passive part — the reader-powered transponder or RFID tag sends the identification information. The third part is the computer system or software which processes the data received from the reader. “Chipless RFID” is a RFID technology, which carries out the identification without silicon chips, thus allowing printing the RFID tags directly on goods.

In its products Skybrake uses the RF identification for mutual device recognition and communication. Actually, the RFID can be called a modern bar code which allows recognition of devices equipped with RF tags. The RFID operation range is 200 m.

Skybrake FireAlarm

Skybrake FireAlarm is a new generation smoke detector with mobile data transmitter. Skybrake FireAlarm reduces the time between the triggering of the smoke detector and the alarm signal reaching the fire-fighting and rescue services.

Skybrake FireAlarm is a new generation smoke detector with integrated data transmitter. In case of emergency the transmitter immediately informs the fire fighting service on the presence of smoke in the building by sending its address, GPS co-ordinates and owner/tenant information. The homeowner and/or tenant are alarmed as well.

The transmitting module sends the information using three methods of wireless data transmission – GSM, GPRS and CSD.

Skybrake F15

Skybrake 504

Skybrake 504 is a high class car immobilizer which ensures a high security level for your vehicle. The Skybrake 504 immobilizer consists of engine disable module and button for PIN code entry. The engine disable module is installed in hidden location in the car, whereas the button is mounted in a convenient location on the dashboard or on the B-pillar.

After the PIN code is entered via button, the system is switched off and the car engine can be started. After switching off the ignition the system is restarted and the PIN code has to be entered again.

The system’s advantages are small size and low current consumption. Thanks to the engine disable module’s small size it is very easy to hide it in the car. For its part, the low current consumption ensures minimum interfering with vehicle electronics.

Skybrake S40 CAN is a high class vehicle alarm which features all most important alarm functions, thus ensuring maximum protection for your car.

Skybrake Touch

Skybrake Touch is an innovative, award-winning immobilizer. In 2010, Skybrake Touch received 2nd prize in Latvian National Export and Innovation Award in the category “Most innovative product”.

Skybrake Touch is a high class vehicle immobilizer. The system consists of separate keyboard for PIN code entry and two engine disable modules. The small size of the engine disable modules allows a well-hidden installation thereof in any vehicle. The keyboard for PIN code entry is placed in the vehicle’s passenger compartment. Skybrake Touch’s keyboard for PIN code entry and engine disable modules are not interconnected by wires, and all communication is wireless, thus decreasing the chance of finding the engine disable modules.

History

During the 17 years of its operation the company has constantly developed and improved. In the first years after its founding in 1994 the company mainly focused on vehicle marking and installation of imported security systems. In 1996, our ongoing experience, enterprise and vision of a safe world were the main arguments in favour of starting manufacturing our own security system.

The company’s 17 years of operation in car electronics have provided a huge experience which it now uses for introducing the newest generation systems for vehicles. Operation within the whole cycle, from product idea to prototype development to manufacturing, installation and communication with the product’s end-users, allows us to gain priceless knowledge about the product’s conformity to each of these phases, as well as a direct product evaluation from its users.

When in 1997 the company launched its own manufacturing facility, its founders could not even imagine how important its current experience in vehicle electronics will prove to be. After seven years of intense product development, manufacturing and distribution in Latvia, in 2004 export of Skybrake products was started to EU and CIS states. Thanks to the well-done “homework”, the Skybrake systems fast gained recognition beyond Latvian borders.

A few years later, following a business partner recommendation, the company started to offer modified Skybrake systems for specific partners and their market specificity. From this moment on, the company also offers OEM solutions. Skybrake develops OEM solutions for companies from varying sectors and various countries, like Great Britain, Russia and Spain.

Commencing the manufacturing stage, the product’s individual Manufacturing Process Instructions, Process Management and Process Control are developed. In the manufacturing of each product the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system is followed thus ensuring high level product manufacturing, process control, individual testing of each product, serial number allocation and registration and Corrective Actions process.

Devices are manufactured according to ISO 9001:2008 and company-specific manufacturing standards which are set forth in the product’s Manufacturing Process Instructions. The manufacturing stage consists of several distinct phases:

Before OEM or the custom product or component development our OEM consultants help to draw up a product specification to meet your specific wishes and needs. When developing and specifying your new product all your wishes are taken into account and you are offered the best the world has to offer. Following the specification, our OEM team, consisting of OEM consultants, engineers, programmers and experts in electronic systems, prepares an offer for your company.

After the approval of the specification Skybrake technical department starts to develop the prototype. Components are chosen, microchips are programmed and connections are formed according to the parameters set forth in the specification. In each phase of prototype development, the functioning of the system is tested in the Skybrake lab.

At the product development stage, work is commenced on the product’s visual appearance, and based on product size and purpose of use the best industrial design solutions are offered for product housing, shape and practical use.

After approval of the prototype the end costs of product materials are quoted (BoM – Bill of Materials).

In its products, the company uses high level data encryption algorithms. Often the Skybrake’s own invention, the Double Dialogue (DD) data transmission system is used, which ensures both a high level data security and a fast and precise data exchange between the devices and/or the server.

DD is a system, created by Skybrake engineers and programmers, that ensures the highest level data security by transmission in 2.4 GHz frequency band.

In vehicle protection products and additional vehicle equipment systems the company uses CAN bus line. CAN bus is a built-in local information exchange network which ensures the function of and communication between all electronic systems of a vehicle. Due to Skybrake’s knowledge and experience in use of CAN bus, all company’s products for vehicles are easy and quick to install, as they require minimum interfering with vehicle electronics.

The company’s main fields of business include product development and manufacturing for vehicle security, fleet management systems, telematic or Pay-As-You-Drive insurance, smart meters, smart house and home security. For every product special Manufacturing Process Instructions (MPI) are developed.
